Reflection:
Why should I fear in times of trouble,
when the iniquity of my persecutors surrounds me,
those who trust in their wealth
and boast of the abundance of their riches?
Truly, no ransom avails for one’s life,
there is no price one can give to God for it.
For the ransom of life is costly,
and can never suffice,
that one should live on for ever
and never see the grave.
What is it that our society is so afraid of that as a nation we will spend on average 123% of our monthly income in December? We’ll spend 9% more on charity, but 40% more on technology and books, and 60% more on entertaining, eating and drinking. We know we can live on less, but can we be grateful for less? Can our gratitude for the priceless stem our yearning for the high-priced?
